Obituary of Anne Marie Materas Gruttadauria

Anne Marie Materas Gruttadauria was born in 1931 in Charlton, MA.  She was the beloved wife of Michael J. Gruttadauria, who predeceased her in 1986.  She leaves behind three daughters; Linda Williams, (son-in-law Cliff), Gail Kiewlen and Debra Howarth (son-in-law Robert); six grandchildren: Aizlyn, Kaiden, and Brenner Pieszak, Evan Kiewlen, Elizabeth Howarth Carpenito and Michael Howarth and two great grandchildren:  Siena and Frank Carpenito.  The youngest of seven children, Anne is survived by only one sibling, Amelia Hein.

Anne grew up in Derby, CT and attended Derby High School.  She married Mike in 1952 and they made their home in Seymour for 34 years until his passing.  Anne moved to Torrington, CT and resided there for 28 years until she moved to South Carolina in 2014.

Anne was a very creative individual and was well known for her sewing and multiple crafting skills.  She sewed costumes for Seymour High School productions, taught quilting classes and won several quilt contests.  She was a past President of the New Hartford Woman’s Club and a President of Torrington Heights Association.  In later years she knitted hundreds of throws and gave them to Veteran’s Homes. As a young girl, she wrote and starred in local plays as well.

In her early years, Anne was considered a “career” girl; she was extremely bright and was successful as a Comptometer Operator, which was the first commercially successful key-driven mechanical calculator!

After her husband’s death, Anne worked as an Accountant for General Datacom for many years.

Anne was a very kind, generous and compassionate lady and truly everyone who knew her, loved her.  She was fun-loving and had a great imagination.  Her grandchildren always looked forward to her storytelling.  Her family was the most important thing in the world to her and she always put them first above all else.

Anne battled Alzheimer’s disease for nearly fourteen years before she finally succumbed to the disease but she will remain forever in our hearts and we find peace in knowing that she is finally reunited with her husband Mike, who was the great love of her life.

A Funeral Mass will be held on November 17, 2018 at St. Peter's Church, 99 East Main St., Torrinton, CT  06790 at 10:00am.  A memorial service will immediatly follow at the Sacred Heart hall, 116 Grove St., Torrington, CT  06790.
