Obituary of James F Mitchell, Jr.

James F. Mitchell Jr. of Lexington, SC on 15 Jan, 2019.  He was born to James F. and Hilda Frances Mitchell on February 28th 1933 in Amityville, NY.  His youth and early teen years were spent in Charleroi, Pennsylvania.  He moved to Parke County Indiana with his family in 1947 where he attended Bridgeton school before departing to join the Marine Corps in early 1950.   He served with Baker Company 1st Engineer Battalion in Korea and returned to the United States in early 1952.  He was assigned to the Marine Corps Air Station Miami, Florida where he married Helen R. Pruner in June of 1952.   After discharge from the Service they returned to Indiana in late 1953.  They lived in the rental house of Brownie and Ann Loden, then in Indianapolis, and later in Greenwood, IN before purchasing what had been his parent’s property at RR #2 Rosedale (now 1106 Denman Road) where they would remain until work took them to South Carolina in 1975.  He was a union bricklayer and worked first though Local 5 in Terre Haute, Indiana and later through Local 14 Kansas City, Kansas.   His works throughout the country stand as monuments to his craftsmanship.  He was a member of the Bridgeton Baptist Church and after moving south, of the Trinity Baptist Church of Cayce, SC where he was longtime member of the choir.  His favorite Hymn was “In the Garden”. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Helen, brothers Bill and Harry, sisters Rose Marie and Hilda, and daughter in law Gale Anne Mitchell.   He is survived by a sister Mary Ellen Carroll of Joliet, IL, son Clifton Vaughan of Camarillo, CA, daughter Fonda Baker (Shawn) of Clayton, NC, granddaughter Meredith Dotson of Fort Mill, SC, and numerous nieces and nephews.
