Obituary of Mary Lois Anderson Lewis

Mary Lois Anderson Lewis of Columbia, South Carolina died on September 26, 2022. The date of her funeral service will be determined at a later time.

Mary was born July 10, 1933 in Bennettsville, South Carolina. She was the daughter of the late Benjamin Franklin Anderson and Lois May McCormac Anderson. She was the wife of the late Tommie Kemp Lewis who was born on September 7, 1931 in Beaufort, North Carolina and died March 27, 2008 in Columbia, South Carolina.

Mary was a graduate of Bennettsville High School and Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina. She was a teacher for many years in the public schools of Bennettsville and Williamsburg County.

Mary was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. In retirement she devoted much of her time to genealogical research both of her family history and compiling records for others’ research. In 2004 she received the South Carolina Genealogical Society’s award for Best South Carolina Family History for her work titled, “Our Mc’s: McCormaig, McCormac, McCormack, McCormick, McDonald, McEachern, and McKellar.” In 2020 she received a Governor’s Award for Volunteerism recognizing the more than one million records of births and deaths from around South Carolina she digitized from old newspaper records which now have approximately 10,000 page views a month from people around the world.

Mary is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Walker Lewis Scull (Walter) of Columbia; her son, Kemp James Lewis (Daphne Phyllis Forbes) of Charleston; and her grandchildren, Anderson “Andy” Lewis Scull of Columbia, Dimitra Grace Lewis Sitzman (James) of Atlanta, Georgia, Blythe Salter Lewis Waite (Gavin) of Brooklyn, New York and James Kemp Lewis of New York, New York.
