Rusty was a decade old customer of our Cox products and, far from being his final flight; wherever he now is, he is spinning circles with a Cox engine equipped airplane, mentoring us with his spirit :)

I met Rusty on through the modeling community, specifically during the bi-weekly video chats he started on line. He was always upbeat, friendly, funny and honest. I recall him eating those Nabisco Peanut Butter Wafer cookies during some of the chats which always made me jealous as those were my favorite cookie. He would waggle the cookies on screen and taunt me by eating them real slow. I will miss my friend very much. Condolences to the family, my deepest sympathy. Fair weather and tight lines Rusty, you will be in our thoughts as long as a control line model airplane flies somewhere in the world.

I met Rusty at R&K Industries which his father was part owner many years ago. The last time I saw Rusty was at
Caughman Park where I was coaching and his son was playing ball at that time. Jacob R. Sellers. My prayers to the family.

It'd be difficult to say anything that hasn't already been said about this great guy, and how much his friends are missing him. His accounts on flying his control line planes became waited-for periodicals on the Cox Engine Forum, and many of us eagerly followed his efforts in his tiny church yard circle and a near-by military base...complete with soldiers running drills around him!
I got to meet him face-to-face in 2017 at the Carolina Classic, watching him and his fellow competitors perform their flying patterns in winds that I would reserve for kite flying.
It seems inadequate to say that we'll miss this guy and all his contributions and pursuits, and can only hope to emulate his passion for the people he loved and the seemly endless energy powering his life.
Thank you for the great times and inspiration, ole bud.
Sincere Condolences to his family and friends.
Kim Stricker...one of Rusty's many fans.

"Rusty" Knowlton, an inspiration to me, a person to emulate and a best friend that I never personally met. Leaves a cavern in the Cox Engine Forum that will never be filled.

I will miss our twice weekly chats and look back fondly on our friendly rivalry while we were both flying in Intermediate. We attended some great contests together. Thinking back to last year I believe I was the last person to fly with you at Joe Nall. A comedy of errors for sure but oh what fun. Tight lines and fair winds my friend.

My name is Mark McRiley. I live in Portland, Oregon. I never had the chance to meet Rusty in person, but got to know him through the modeling community. I first corresponded with Rusty online through the CEF, where he helped me with issues, taught me new techniques, and sent me parts to help with my building and flying. Then I spoke with him on the phone. Later, I spent many enjoyable evenings talking with him and doing show-and-tell on his semi-weekly online video chats. Rusty was always complementing me and others on what we were doing, giving encouragement and helpful advice. He was a friend that I cherished greatly, though I never met him in person, nor thought I ever would. But he was a great presence in my life nevertheless. I will miss him greatly.

I as a Hungarian member of COX Engine Forum where Rusty was a founding member have often exchanged views and opinions about our hobby with him. Rusty has always been a very open person listening to the opinion of others and supportive with his wide experience. His very meticulous and precise explanation helped others learn a lot about our hobby, and the joys of life, in general.
His attitude has also taught me how to preserve our mental youth and strength and look at life with humor and optimism.
With myself living in Central Europe, our paths could not have crossed in principle, but we planned to meet in April 2018 on my overseas trip to the US...unfortunately, because of my tight itinerary, this plan has not materialized.
I will always remember Rusty as a distant friend whom I have never met but will never forget either.
My heart-felt condolences are sent from Budapest, Hungary to his family.

Although Rusty has been a friend since the early 1980s, it was only much later that our relationship grew from that of a good friend to that of a great friend. Even though he had many trials of his own, or perhaps because he had many trials of his own, he was able to help me greatly during my time of need. Rusty created and then maintained a webpage for me to post updates on my six month hospitalized loved one. This took him a considerable amount of time, effort and daily work, and it was really appreciated. Expressing my feelings truly helped me to maintain my sanity, which allowed me to be a competent caregiver to someone who really needed it. Rusty has been what I would call a best friend since then. He had so much trauma and pain for so long, but his spirit was always strong and his heart was huge. I wonder how many other lives he has touched!?!

"Rusty was a miraculous strong man who survived on Dialysis for 35 years…teaching all who knew him that there were no obstacles in life preventing you from living it to the fullest!"
Rusty did his best to ensure that a new generation would keep our hobby going. To Rusty it never mattered where you were from, what you did, we were all just equal in Rusty's eyes, which is how it should be. He set a darned good example of what our lives should be like to make the world a little bit better place to be.
I enjoyed and learned so much from him on the Cox Engine Forum. He shared his joy of flying his 1/2A models and would share his knowledge freely with all, on his videos. https://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtu.be&hd=1&v=k3wC4uvo-RE. Flying a Lil Satan in the Church yard across the street, and didn’t get struck by lightning! By God! He was the most friendly ,dedicated, welcoming, witty and understanding host and he made everyone feel included in the forum. I just wanted to say a few words of thanks and goodbye to Rusty. I never met him in person, but feel like I lost a good friend What a good person and a sad lost to all . We on the CEF will miss him .
Our condolences and prayers go out to Rusty and his family.
Rest in peace Rusty, may your lines always be tight, and your landings be smooth.

It was my pleasure to have got to know Rusty, even from thousands of miles away in Australia. He was welcoming, inspiring and encouraging to all. He was always positive even in the face of adversity and has set a great example for us all to follow.
He will be sadly missed by all on Cox Engine Forum and Stunthangar where he spent his time sharing his wealth of knowledge of our hobby with everyone. My deepest condolences to Holley & the family.

Rusty and Holley have been our best friends for 35+years and we are grieving the loss of Rusty. Rusty should be in the Guinness book of world records for 32+ years on dialysis...without a kidney transplant. Rusty and Holley are responsible for our love of Pawleys Island. It is our “family tradition” too according to our granddaughter Abby. Rusty was responsible for Abby, Gary and Ashley’s love of surf fishing. Rusty made me a devoted eater of raw oysters and boiled peanuts. His were the best boiled peanuts you could get. I’m glad I have his recipe. He made us laugh with his droll humor and on point commentaries. And, he was never offensive with his words. People today could learn from him. We knew this was coming, but we are so sad. Rusty, Gary and I love you and will remember you always. You will be remembered every time our toes and our grandkids toes hit the creek and beach at Pawleys. So long creek freak. We love and miss you and promise to look after Holley and Al. Susan and Gary Davis and family

I knew Rusty Knowlton on the Stunt Hangar model airplane on-line forum. He was a knowledgeable person to share our hobby with.
Rusty was a great contributor and leader in the hobby. He brought people together. He gave people something to look forward to by expanding opportunities in the hobby. He was an honorable man.
I am sadden by his passing.
I offer my prayers and condolences to his family.
